The foreign spouse may acquire Italian citizenship upon application, in the presence of the following requirements:
in Italy: two years of legal residence after the marriage or from the date of acquisition of Italian citizenship by naturalization by the spouse;
abroad: three years after the marriage or from the date of acquisition of Italian citizenship by naturalization by the spouse. These terms are reduced by half in the presence of children born or adopted by the spouses;

Spouses of Italian citizens may apply for citizenship by marriage. To apply pursuant to art. 5, the following must have occurred:
– 2 years of legal and continuous residence in Italy from the date of marriage;
– 3 years from the date of marriage, if resident abroad;
– 2 years from the date of the oath and from the date of marriage, in the case of a naturalized Italian spouse.
- Residence permit or long-term EC residence permit and Photocopy of passport and identity card – valid. *EU citizens must instead request and present the permanent residence certificate (issued by the municipality of residence).
- Identification document of the Italian spouse and date of the oath (if the spouse is naturalized)
- Full Marriage Certificate / Marriage Certificate: You will need to submit a copy of your valid marriage certificate, which will attest to the validity of your marriage.
- Historical certificate of residence valid in the previous six months / Family status certificate or self-certification
- Certificate of knowledge of the Italian language at a level not lower than B1, Certificate not necessary only for holders of a long-term EU residence permit or for those who have signed an integration agreement
- Birth Certificate (Translated) – Birth Certificate Extract: You will need to provide your birth certificates, translated and legalized.
- Criminal record certificate – Criminal record certificate from the country of origin and any third countries of residence: translated and legalized if required by agreement between states. The criminal record certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of issue of the original document.
